Borderlands Trail Running | Manifesto

What’s stirring in a person’s soul that leads them to run after never running before?

Perhaps they see an aging person in their stage of life (a partner + kids + a mortgage + a job they like or don’t like) running as free as they did in high school whether on a track or cross country or for no sport at all.

Some days we’re worn down by noble responsibility that fills our calendars.

Each plate we spin feels like sentimental fine china.

Or maybe its not plates, its an endless Rupe Goldberg machine that moves only its own speed.

But the machine is comforting whether you like it or not compared to stochastic nightmares of unpredictability.

And then you see a friend from 25 years ago suffering through the Moab desert for four days and you realize the body you once had is the one you still have.

Everyone has their own answer.

Perhaps a routine doctors visit comes with a warning that its time to care about your body and like most ultratrail runners you destroy it on the other side of spectrum of sedentary.

Or the death of a loved one showing you that life is too short to not try things.

Or the unexplainable change in their soul that ‘I will someday’ is now ‘today’.

Whatever compels you to move forward is good and welcome.

If you love racing.

If you hate it.

If you run in the newest best gear.If you run in Keds and a New Era Texas Rangers hat.  Whatever.

There is no right way to run and anyone that protects some sacred version of it is no different than Wal Mart opening up next to a mom and pop shop in a small town.
