Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running

Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running Podcast

Borderlands is a storytelling podcast about the people, races, gear, and culture that make trail and ultra running worth caring about.

The show sits where sport, obsession, and meaning collide: iconic races, legendary athletes, strange subcultures, hard-earned wisdom, and the ordinary runners doing extraordinary things on trails around the world.

Guests have included Scott Jurek, Dean Karnazes, Camille Herron, Laz Lake, and many of the athletes, founders, and characters shaping the sport.

If you love trail running not just as exercise, but as a culture, a community, and a way of seeing the world, you’re in the right place.

Josh Rosenthal

Josh Rosenthal is the host of the Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running Podcast, a trail running and ultrarunning podcast from Borderlands Media. The show explores the people, races, athletes, gear, ideas, and culture shaping modern trail running and ultramarathon running.

Host of the Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running Podcast

Rosenthal launched the podcast in 2022 while promoting Borderlands’ first documentary, DFL BEFORE DNF, the story of Jeremy Cox finishing the 2019 Buffalo 100 after the finish line had been taken down. After several major running podcasts declined his attempt to buy ad space for the film, Rosenthal started his own show.

About the Podcast

The Borderlands Trail and Ultra Running Podcast has become a home for long-form conversations with ultrarunners, trail runners, race directors, filmmakers, founders, coaches, and thinkers across the sport. Episodes explore iconic races, legendary athletes, trail running culture, ultramarathon history, gear, endurance, failure, ambition, and why people keep going when things get hard.

Trail Running and Ultrarunning Background

Rosenthal ran his first trail race in 2014 and completed his first ultramarathon the following year. He began with the North Face Endurance Challenge series and later found a deeper connection with the desert races of central and southern Utah.

Borderlands Media

Before launching Borderlands, Rosenthal spent years as a touring musician, releasing ten albums and performing nationally. That background shaped his approach to podcasting: conversational, curious, story-driven, and focused on the meaning behind endurance sports rather than race results alone.

Through Borderlands Media, Rosenthal continues to build a platform for trail running stories, ultrarunning culture, athlete interviews, race coverage, documentaries, essays, and original media about the sport.
