The first medals of the Championships with the Uphill races are upon us. One name to watch in the men’s field: Tyler McCandless of Team USA. McCandless lives in Fort Collins, Colorado—just one town over from Loveland, where I live.

A former marathoner turned mountain specialist, he’s built a career balancing elite running with work as a data scientist. Tomorrow, he lines up in the purest format of them all: straight uphill, all-out, no place to hide.
