What if Sisyphus was Happy? Trail Grit | Episode 1

Merrell sponsored a 4 episode docuseries called Trail Grit.

In episode 1, I explored the tension between loving the 100 mile ultramarathon distance and sucking so bad at it.

Why do I (and so many others) keep trying to run 100 miles when it continually puts on our heels, punches us in the mouth, and all the other cliches?

The answer for me is found in reframing Sisyphus’ happiness with the simple daily task of doing something unattainable.  We assume that because Sisyphus never gets the rock to the top that he is also unhappy and plagued with feelings of failure.

What if he wakes up everyday happy to try again?  What if he wakes up every day only thinking about his next step and not an eternity of try and fail, try and fail, try and fail.

If that is the case, can I find happiness and fulfiliment in the build up, the training, the planning, the start line, and the moment that ultimately pounds me in gut?

Absolutely.
